Hackers attack Malaysian government websites - 16Jun2011Jan 13, 2012
KUALA LUMPUR: Hackers have attacked Malaysian government websites, authorities said Thursday, following a threat by the "Anonymous" activist group which accused Malaysia of censoring the Internet. Fifty-one government websites were targeted, causing disruptions to at least 41 of them, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said in a statement. It said the attacks on websites with the .gov.my domain started shortly before midnight Wednesday and lasted several hours, but appeared to have caused little damage. "The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission confirms that there were indeed attempts to hack several websites," it said. "However, we do not expect the overall recovery to these websites to take long as most websites have already recovered from the attack," it added. The commission said it would work with enforcement agencies, security experts and service providers to keep the situation in check. Malaysian authorities had Wednesday braced themselves for cyber attacks after Internet activists Anonymous warned on a website that they would target the government portal www.Malaysia.gov.my. The website was still down on Thursday. MCMC did not specify which websites were hacked, only saying its own site was targeted but that the hacking attempt was unsuccessful. Anonymous sabotaged Turkish sites last week to protest against Internet censorship. Its Malaysia attack plan threat followed an order by the MCMC to Internet service providers last ...

Malaysia Bersih Rally 0907 Part 1..Jan 04, 2012
1. Clean the electoral roll The electoral roll is marred with irregularities such as deceased persons and multiple persons registered under a single address or non-existent addresses. The electoral roll must be revised and updated to wipe out these 'phantom voters'. The rakyat have a right to an electoral roll that is an accurate reflection of the voting population. In the longer term, BERSIH 2.0 also calls for the EC to implement an automated voter registration system upon eligibility to reduce irregularities. 2. Reform postal ballot The current postal ballot system must be reformed to ensure that all citizens of Malaysia are able to exercise their right to vote. Postal ballot should not only be open for all Malaysian citizens living abroad, but also for those within the country who cannot be physically present in their voting constituency on polling day. Police, military and civil servants too must vote normally like other voters if not on duty on polling day. The postal ballot system must be transparent. Party agents should be allowed to monitor the entire process of postal voting. 3. Use of indelible ink Indelible ink must be used in all elections. It is a simple, affordable and effective solution in preventing voter fraud. In 2007, the EC decided to implement the use of indelible ink. However, in the final days leading up to the 12th General Elections, the EC decided to withdraw the use of indelible ink citing legal reasons and rumours of sabotage. BERSIH 2.0 demands ...

More rains hit Pakistan as aid agencies boost relief effortsAug 27, 2010
Donors begin reaching Pakistan with aid. On Sunday, August 8, another bout of heavy rains added to the burden of the country's already worst-ever floods, which have affected over 15 million and claimed more than 1600 lives. Additional fatalities were reported as landslides pummeled northern regions and the entire northwestern Swat valley as well as parts of Punjab and Sindh, which were isolated. (Pushto language) Ajmal, 16 years old (M): Flood waters came at 3 am. All we could do was save ourselves. Most of our stuff is buried under the rubble and our house is destroyed. Witnessing the devastation in some areas he visited, Pakistan's Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani requested international aid, saying that the disasters had become too vast for the government to handle. International neighbors have thus responded, with countries such as Germany doubling her contributions to €2 million, while the French and Malaysian governments each donated US$1.4 million and US$1 million respectively. In a response to a television appeal by several UK-based humanitarian aid agencies, the British public sent £4 million in addition to 2000 all-weather tents, while a £10 million donation was made personally from British ministers. The US is donating US$10 million and has sent six helicopters to assist with rescue and relief efforts, while His Majesty King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia has also sent eight planes of humanitarian aid thus far. Sri Lanka has also dispatched a ...

Malaysia Arrests Suspected Islamist MilitantNov 05, 2011
A major arrest in Malaysia today. A suspected leader of a Singapore radical Islamist group linked to the 2002 Bali bombings is now behind bars. Mas Selamat Kastari was arrested in Johor, just across the strait in Singapore. It puts an end to a year-long manhunt for the city-state's most wanted man. Security experts say the capture of Mas Selamat is important because it fosters cross-border cooperation. It also prevented Selamat from connecting with militants in Indonesia to plan attacks such as the one that killed over 200 people in Bali in 2002. Malaysia's government says the arrest came through intelligence from Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. The possibility of extradition depends on discussions with Singapore. [Hishamuddin Hussein, Malaysian Minister of Home Affairs]: "He was planning something to which allows us to arrest him. I can't go into details. This is too sensitive. It involves three parties: it involves the Singapore government, involves the Indonesian Government and it involves cooperation between intelligence agencies under the three governments. And this is something that I don't want to jeopardize because it may involve other people as well." Mas Selamat is alleged to have been planning to hijack a plane and crash it into Singapore's Changi Airport. His escape through the toilet window of a prison in Singapore in February 2008 sparked a huge manhunt and an Interpol alert. Officials say Mas Selamat was a leader of the Singapore cell of Jemaah Islamiah ...
Malaysia braces for cyberattacks - Primetime Asia with Timothy And Glenda (15 Jun 2011)Aug 02, 2011
Primetime Asia with Timothy And Glenda Malaysia braces for cyberattacks Posted: 15 June 2011 1543 hrs KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian officials said Wednesday they were bracing for hacker attacks on government websites by a group which sabotaged Turkish sites last week to protest against Internet censorship. Internet activists Anonymous warned on a website that they would target Malaysia's government portal www.Malaysia.gov.my beginning at 1930 GMT on Wednesday. "We are aware of the hack threat and we believe that the threat is real. We have alerted the relevant parties and government agencies," said Husin Jazri, head of the government's CyberSecurity Malaysia agency. The attack plan was posted on a website and spotted by Finnish computer software company F-Secure on Tuesday, which raised the alarm via Twitter. The hackers explained in a YouTube clip the rationale for the attack, claiming that Malaysia's censorship was eroding human rights. "We fear that if you make further decisions to take away human freedom, we are obligated to act fast and have no mercy," it said in the video. The threat follows an order by Malaysia's communications and multimedia industry regulator to Internet service providers last week to block 10 file and video-sharing websites that violated copyright laws, annoying users who regularly download pirated content. On Tuesday Turkish police arrested 32 people suspected of belonging to Anonymous for attacks on government websites. The movement rose to fame ...
Putrajaya,MalaysiaAug 27, 2010
Putrajaya... a family weekend getaway in the Federal Administrative Capital of Malaysia. My wife and I were initially not really interested to travel to Putrajaya. At the first visit , this city does not impress us much. The city look deserted and chilly . The city looks city something out of DAY AFTER TOMMOROW scene. Quiet and spooky. Perhaps it was our unplanned stopover at this city and we found no activities here. However, one day we had planned to visit this city again after watching a TV program about Putrajaya. What a surprise ! We did not notice a lot of things on the first visit. Now , this is something Im working out to tell the world about this futuristic city. We found out that it is always changing and you would need 3 days 2 nights to explore the place. How Putrajaya become a city ? Putrajaya has been in the government planning for almost 20 years. So, I guess it is unfair to think that it was recently a pop up idea by the leader. Interestingly the government of that time was searching for a new administrative centre in the 1980s to disperse some development away from Kuala Lumpur. A site called Prang Besar in the district Sepang was chosen for this purpose. The project is named after the countrys first Prime Minister, YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra al-Haj. Construction of the new city began in August 1995, and is now targeted for completion by 2015 It is expected that most of the Federal Government agencies will have moved to Putrajaya by 2010. Kula and Kit Siang speak on Hindraf gathering #1Jul 10, 2011
YB M. Kulasegaran (DAP - Ipoh Barat) tabled an emergency motion to discuss the Demonstration held on Sunday 25thNovember07 in the city of Kuala Lumpur. My motion came up to day but fornatuly it was rejected99 My motion reads as follows: Indians are third class citizens? The wholly unnecessary and excessive use of force by police in firing of tear gas and water cannons against poor Tamils and ordinary Malaysians gathering to voice their grievances is simply intolerable and totally unacceptable in a democratic society respecting the human rights of its citizen. Over 450 were arrested and dozens suffered serious injuries. The use of such excessive force is evidence of the discrimination against Tamils and other fellow Malaysians, the state have shown consistently in recent years. It is yet another example of a high-handed, ham-fisted and undemocratic tactics used against poor citizens who are peacefully assembly to air their grievances. The serious violation of human rights and the high handed manner of police and government action calls for a serious debate in this august house. It is a pressing issue because the Indian community of two million people are upset and angered. They ask whether they are equal first class citizens or unequal third class citizens who deserves such wanton treatment. Peaceful demonstrations and marches are common and accepted practices around the world. It is a natural form of showing displeasure. Only backward uncivilized societies will use force ...
