They generally lack health insurance and a retirement plan; in the city, they hope to get fair treatment, from both the employer and the factory. They don't want to be like their parents, returning to their poor hometown; they want a new life in the city. In other business news... it's gearing up to be one of the largest infrastructure deals seen in years. Two Hong Kong power companies are planning to buy EDF's British power grids for $9.1 billion. Hong Kong Electric and Cheung Kong Infrastructure are planning to buy France's EDF's British power grids for $9.1 billion. EDF, the world's second-largest utility, will announce the sale in Paris later on Friday, when it is due to also release its first-half results. Trading in shares of both Hong Kong firms, controlled by Asia's richest man, Li Ka-shing, was suspended on Friday. HKE and CKI beat the only other remaining bidder in the process, a rival consortium that included Macquarie Group, Canada Pension Plan and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority. The transaction is the largest such deal since October 2006, as the onset of the credit crisis hampered funding for these kinds of transaction that rely heavily on cheap debt to ramp up returns from low-margin infrastructure companies. Utilities throughout Europe are shedding assets to pay for billions of euros of takeovers as well as to raise money for billions of euros of upcoming investments in new power plants. The deal comes as part of a slew of grid sales by utilities in Europe, partly for regulatory reasons as well as because the assets no longer provided the returns the utilities expected.

It was Donald Tsang's final Policy Address, and the first to be given in the new Legislative Council building at Tamar. The Chief Executive offered some feel-good surprises to certain sectors of the public, including government-subsidised reductions in public transport fares for the elderly and the disabled, an extension of welfare payments to the elderly settled in Guangdong,and paternity leave measures for civil servants. But the measure that attracted most attention is the revival of the government-subsidised Home Ownership Scheme which was scrapped in 2002 due to the property slump. On the other hand, public requests to introduce a universal retirement plan were flatly dismissed.Also missing from the address, in the views of critics, were comprehensive strategies to tackle issues such as the wealth gap, the ageing population and governance reforms.

One volunteer trip to Tijuana during 1960 changed Dr. James Turpin 49C 51T 55M, founder of Project Concern International, forever. He didn't know it at the time, but that same visit would lead him to save the lives of millions of others. Shortly after his return from Tijuana, Turpin, his wife and their four children packed their bags for Hong Kong and moved into their new residence: a 62-foot barge named Yauh Oi (Brotherly Love) that served as a modern floating medical clinic for 35000 "boat people" in Hong Kong's typhoon shelter. Turpin and his colleagues soon recognized that curing existing disease only addressed half the problem as patients returned home to face the same conditions that made them sick in the first place. Their reaction was to next convert an abandoned US Special Forces camp into a training center for villagers in the mountains of Vietnam where thousands of starving Montagnards resided. Project Concern volunteers have demonstrated a continued dedication to addressing the problem of self-sufficiency, as evident by their discovery of a new and now commonly used method of easily sanitizing contaminated drinking water. A similar story can be told for Tijuana, Indonesia, Appalachia, and the Navajo Reservations, which were soon to follow. Due to Turpin's 50 years of unwavering dedication and sacrifice, Project Concern now operates in 19 countries. With her running mate Queen Mary, she served as a luxury liner between Southampton, UK and New York City, USA via Cherbourg, France. She was also contracted for over twenty years to carry the Royal Mail as the second half of the two ships' weekly express service. While being constructed, in the mid-1930s by John Brown and Company at Clydebank, Scotland, she was known as Hull 552 [2] but when launched, on 27 September 1938, she was named in honour of Queen Elizabeth, who was then Queen Consort and in 1952 became the Queen Mother. With a design that improved upon that of her running mate, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth was a slightly larger ship, the largest passenger liner ever built at that time and for fifty-six years thereafter. She first entered service in February 1940 as a troopship in World War II, and it was not until October 1946 that she served in her intended role as an ocean liner. With the decline in the popularity of the transatlantic route, both ships were replaced by RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 in 1969. Queen Mary was retired from service in November 1968, and was sold to the city of Long Beach, California. The Queen Elizabeth was sold to a succession of buyers, most of whom had adventurous and unsuccessful plans for her.
