KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 19 (Bernama) -- The Dewan Negara today passed the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2007 which provides for the retirement age of Election Commission (EC) members be extended from 65 to 66. Fifty senators voted for the amendment, one was against and another abstained. In debating the Bill, Senator Datuk Gooi Hoe Hin, who supported the amendment, said the decision was a constructive move in view of the EC's status as an independent body entrusted with the task of conducting elections, a pillar of democracy practised in Malaysia. Echoing Gooi, Senator Datuk Soon Tian Szu, who also voted for the amendment, said Malaysia had displayed transparency through the impartiality of the EC in conducting elections. Senator Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi said the amendment was crucial as it involved the integrity, credibility and public trust in the EC. "A commission as sensitive as the EC needs experienced hands who have gone through the mill of conducting several elections," he said. -- BERNAMA

This CIMG0946.AVI YouTube is part of Malaysian Budget 2012: PM YAB Dato' Seri Najib Razak announced the compulsory retirement age for civil servants to be increased from 58 years old to 60 years old during the Malaysian Budget 2012 in Parliament on Friday, 7th October, 2011. Recorded live on TV3 *PM YAB Dato' Seri Najib Razak mengumumkan Umur Pesaraan Wajib dilanjutkan daripada 58 tahun kepada 60 tahun semasa Bajet 2012 di Parliament. Our The Star in-house columnists' views on the budget * It is a terrible disappointment that the retirement age for the private sector remains at 55 while for civil servants it has been raised to 60 from 58. This widens the disparity between civil servants and the private sector to a very large five years and seriously undermines the lifelong earning capacity of private sector employees. The private sector retirement age should have been raised to at least 58. The Government has capitulated to the pressure of private sector employers, disappointing millions of workers and hampering its own efforts towards becoming a high income nation.
